Summer Skincare Tips

In Summer it's easy to get a bit complacent about our skincare regime. The warmer temperatures and humid air means our skin isn’t as dry, itchy or flakey as it can be during winter. And by spending more time outside during summer, we get a healthy dose of Vitamin D from the sun along with sun-kissed skin.

Quick reality check, as prolonged time in the sun and heat now will do more damage than good in the long term. Here’s what you need to know to save your skin for many Summer’s to come...

  1. All go on the H2O. Hydrate, hydrate, HYDRATE! With warmer temperatures and being outside a lot more, means more sweating and internal dehydration. This leads to dizziness and headaches, which is no fun of course when you’re trying to enjoy the summery weather with friends and family. The health authorities commonly recommend eight 8-ounce glasses (which equals about 2 litres, or half a gallon). This is called the 8×8 rule and is very easy to remember. We recommend good old pure, plain water!
  2. SPF, new BFF! Unless you’re planning to hide from the summer sun altogether and only come out at night, slathering on a broad spectrum sunscreen/sunblock is THE best way to protect your skin. Now, we don’t mean just applying it once before venturing out into the sun and you’re done for the day, you need to reapply every 2-3 hours (more if you are swimming lots) when you’re out in the sun. Try to stay covered up or out of the sun from mid-morning to late afternoon as this is when the sun is most damaging on our skin. There are a fantastic array of sun protection that suits your skin and needs, we recommend River Veda: Rejuvenate Day Star SPF 30, by World Organics
  3. Rub a-dub Scrub! With the heat and humidity comes added sweat, sunscreen, moisturisers and after-sun skin soothers. This can lead to a buildup of product on your skin causing it to breakout in unsightly spots. The key is to exfoliate at the right times. Not only will it help you achieve an even fresh spray tan (scrub up before to prep to your skin), but gentle facial exfoliation will help keep your skin free of clogged pores and create a better canvas for makeup application. However, keep in mind that exfoliation reveals new, sensitive skin that could be more prone to burning in the sun. Reserve your exfoliating habits for the evening, or for days when you aren’t heading straight from the shower to the pool. Naturally, we recommend one of our fab organic and natural skin loving Honor Body Scrubs!
  4. Cool comfort. Oh snap! You forgot the sunscreen, didn’t apply enough (or reapply), or got caught in a sun drenched outing. Unfortunately, the damage is now done, but you don’t have to suffer in pain! Super-soothing botanicals like Aloe Vera are cooling, anti-inflammatory that also provides moisturizing relief and reduce redness. Applying aloe vera-containing products after exposure to the sun will calm and soothe your skin, leaving you far less likely to experience that awful scaly dryness that comes with summer. It’s also said to contain antioxidants that can help repair and treat sun damage skin and prevent free radicals from doing their undesirable work. Apply cooling Aloe Vera gel generously to over-exposed skin, preferably at the first sight of a pink glow. We absolutely love Pure Nature products, and they have a brilliant natural Aloe Vera Gel
  5. You can leave you hat on! There are so many benefits to wearing a hat in summer, they are stylish, attractive, help to keep you cool, but above all It can help protect the areas that we may usually find hard to reach with the sunscreen - like the scalp. As well as the places that we tend to forget like the back of the neck, shoulders, the rims of our ears and let's not forget most importantly our face! Hats also help to protect our eyes by providing shade, protecting its delicate internal structures and keeping you from squinting in the sun. When looking for that perfect summer hat, opt for a wide-brim for full protection. It also needs to be comfortable - otherwise you won’t wear it.

For me personally, Valentine's Day is such a 'have', as we are all bombarded by the ‘lovey-dovey’ marketing that raises expectations and has turned a sweet, simple day into a commercial success at the expense of singles’ and couples’ everywhere. Why do we need a day to be told to appreciate someone you love? A crush, friends, family, or yourself?.....so why not use Valentine’s Day as a reminder to show that you appreciate them being in your life.
