Cheer's to Chia Seed Oil

Chia seed oil is one of beauty's biggest buzz ingredients of late, with good reason. You’ve probably already used this high-fibre, high-protein snack in your breakfast cereal, blended it into smoothies or drank it in kombucha, but it is also a Superfood Super-Moisturiser!

Skin Benefits:

So, Chia seed (and the oil produced from it through cold-pressing extraction) is considered the richest botanical source of omega-3 fatty acids found in nature, offering more than flax-seed or fish oil. These fatty acids work to encourage a more plump look to the skin by boosting the production of collagen. They also help maintain moisture levels, which reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles as well as relieving dryness, itchiness and peeling.

Chia seed oil is also a powerful anti-inflammatory and a great source of vitamin B3 and zinc, which helps with oily skin and clogged pores, so it’s great for those who have acne prone skin, as it will calm the skin and reduce inflammation, which helps with treating acne scars.

Many people prize it for its antioxidants, including chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid, (and to get your tongue really twisting) as well as myricetin, quercetin, and kaempferol flavonoids. But all you really need to know about these components with tricky names, is that they offer protection from environmental stressors, it’s a multivitamin for your skin. In fact, the antioxidants in Chia seed oil have shown to be even stronger than vitamin C and vitamin E, two common and powerful antioxidants.

Internal Health Benefits:

Incorporating Chia seeds into your diet is very easy. Like I mentioned above, it’s likely you’ve already used it as it can be found in a variety of breakfast cereals among other things. The fibre in chia seeds also helps to support your digestive system. Feeding the bacteria in the intestine, which helps them to thrive and nourish your body with essential compounds for immunity and overall health.

Chia seeds are a great source of plant protein. These tiny little seeds are about 14% protein, which is high compared to most plants! A diet higher in protein has been shown to help reduce appetite, improve muscle repair, and even curb nighttime snacking by 50%!

Chia seeds support healthy bones. Gram for gram, Chia seeds have more calcium than most dairy products providing 18% of the RDI for adults in a single ounce! As well as being high in several nutrients important for bone health, including calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and protein.

As well as being Gluten-free and low carb, they also aid to detoxify the body and are great for those with Type 2 Diabetes. A study in those with Type 2 Diabetes showed that Chia seeds can significantly lower blood pressure and a marker for inflammation.

Chia seeds aren’t only fun to eat, but they’re so full of goodness that your body will love them!

As an all-round, powerful calming anti-inflammatory, anti-ageing, light-weight moisturiser, this power-packed seed definitely should be part of your beauty and health repertoire, as it ticks all the beauty and dietary health boxes.
