7 top tips to stop sabotaging your skin this winter

Autumn is in full swing for us Southern Hemisphere folks, and with the weather starting to cool off, it brings the hint of crisp frosty mornings and for some of us the promise of snowy white landscapes. What winter does promise us all is dull, dry, itchy and flaky skin.

Did you know you might be unknowingly sabotaging your skin when the temperature drops? Here are some tips and advice for adjusting your summer skincare routine.

  • Switch out your water-based moisturiser for oil-based if your skin feels tight and dry 30 minutes or so after moisturising. Look for a moisturizer made with glycerin and sorbitol derived from natural sources. Also plant oils such as olive, castor, jojoba and coconut as they make great emollients because they mimic the soothing oils our own skin produces. • I know it's tempting but avoid taking long, hot baths and showers. Lukewarm water showers and baths will be kinder to your skin’s natural oils, but since this might not be appealing keep the hot water, but limit your time to 10 minutes tops.
  • Apply body creams once you step out of the shower, immediately after towel drying. Even the humidity in the bathroom will help attract moisture into the skin.
  • If your skin feels itchy, avoid using soap and stick to a gentle body wash instead. Also, alcohol based products like hand sanitisers and toners are oil-controlling, which can further dehydrate skin that's already been sapped of moisture from exposure to chilly temperatures, dry air, and indoor heating.
  • Don’t forget your lips! Our lips have no oil glands of their own to keep them hydrated, so apply a nourishing lip balm often. And avoid licking your lips, as the enzymes in saliva can increase irritation, causing swelling and even cracking.
  • Sunscreen up! Every avid skier and snowboarder knows what the sun and snow combo can do to your face (Panda eyes!) and just because the sun has toned down on the heat, doesn’t mean those UV rays aren't still doing your skin damage. Find yourself a moisturising sunscreen and save yourself from wrinkles, redness, age spots, sagging skin, and even melanoma….

By making a few small changes to your usual warm-weather routine you will save yourself a lot of time and energy this winter and your skin will thank you come Summertime.

For me personally, Valentine's Day is such a 'have', as we are all bombarded by the ‘lovey-dovey’ marketing that raises expectations and has turned a sweet, simple day into a commercial success at the expense of singles’ and couples’ everywhere. Why do we need a day to be told to appreciate someone you love? A crush, friends, family, or yourself?.....so why not use Valentine’s Day as a reminder to show that you appreciate them being in your life.
